Movement, Behavior, and Habitat Use of Whale Sharks (Rhincodon typus) in the Tropical Eastern Pacific Ocean

چکیده

Whale sharks ( Rhincodon typus ) are found circumglobally in tropical, subtropical, and warm temperate waters, their known seasonal aggregations migratory movements influenced by factors such as ocean currents, thermobiological systems, patterns of productivity. Several locations the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean habitats for R. ; Although it has long been that whale aggregate along Panama coast, little is relation to movement patterns, behavior, habitat use. In this study, we investigated behaviors tagged oceanographic variables examined overlap foraging routes with marine protected areas (MPAs), industrial fishing areas, traffic. Satellite tracks from 30 coastal waters were examined, including nine tags suspicious earlier detachment. A hidden Markov model was then used identify different behavioral states (foraging migrating) relationships environmental (sea surface temperature, primary productivity, chlorophyll- a concentrations, eddy location/speed) Tracks also superimposed on maps MPAs, regional vessel traffic degree overlap. foraged mainly within Panamanian exclusive economic zone but moved north south coast out open ocean. Association of whale sharks (Rhincodon typus) with thermo-biological frontal systems of the eastern tropical Pacific

Satellite tracking of 27 whale sharks in the eastern tropical Pacific, examined in relation to environmental data, indicates preferential occupancy of thermo-biological frontal systems. In these systems, thermal gradients are caused by wind-forced circulation and mixing, and biological gradients are caused by associated nutrient enrichment and enhanced primary productivity. Two of the frontal s...

Population structure and residency of whale sharks Rhincodon typus at Utila, Bay Islands, Honduras.

There were 479 reported whale shark Rhincodon typus encounters between 1999 and 2011 at the island of Utila, which forms part of the Meso-American Barrier Reef System (MBRS) in the western Caribbean Sea. The majority of R. typus were found to feed on small bait fish associated with various tuna species. Ninety-five individual R. typus, ranging from 2 to 11 m total length (LT ), were identified ...

An Unprecedented Aggregation of Whale Sharks, Rhincodon typus, in Mexican Coastal Waters of the Caribbean Sea

Whale sharks, Rhincodon typus, are often perceived as solitary behemoths that live and feed in the open ocean. To the contrary, evidence is accumulating that they are gregarious and form seasonal aggregations in some coastal waters. One such aggregation occurs annually north of Cabo Catoche, off Isla Holbox on the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico. Here we report a second, much denser aggregation of ...

How large is the world's largest fish? Measuring whale sharks Rhincodon typus with laser photogrammetry.

Laser photogrammetry was found to be a promising new cost-effective technique for measuring free-swimming whale sharks Rhincodon typus. Photogrammetric measurements were more precise than visual size estimates by experienced researchers, with results from the two methods differing by 9· 8 ± 1· 1% (mean ±s.e.). A new metric of total length and the length between the fifth gill and first dorsal f...

Whale Shark (Rhincodon typus) Seasonal Occurrence, Abundance and Demographic Structure in the Mid-Equatorial Atlantic Ocean

Whale sharks are generally associated with environmental factors that drive their movements to specific locations where food availability is high. Consequently, foraging is believed to be the main reason for the formation of whale shark aggregations. Feeding aggregations occur mainly in nearshore areas and are composed primarily of immature individuals. Conversely, aggregations of mature adults...
